I always liked to choose alternative ways to travel, as I was never big into touring in buses. I never felt I got enough sleep, and having to deal with the Mohawk, makeup, clothing, and everything else, buses were not the most convenient way to go from show to show. I much preferred staying in hotels.

When on tour doing smaller venues, the crew needs to get to the club the next day, early enough for load in, but the band doesn’t need to be there until sound check time, which is usually several hours later. This means that if you travel by bus, the band and crew travel together. The band ends up either getting a day room at the hotel or hanging around the venue all day, which I really didn’t like. It made me feel like I was back in junior high school rock band or my early band Topaz!

So when we looked at the budget for our upcoming tour with Saga, I came up with a totally different way of doing this. I found a great deal from a rental car company that would actually save me money, compared to traveling by bus. And it would be a lot more luxurious. I ended up renting three different brand-new cars from my dear rental car lady.

I had a Mercedes 560 SEC. There was also a top-of-the-line BMW and an Audi Quattro. That car was super fast. And in Germany, we could drive 160 miles per hour or more on the Autobahn, without any problem.

For this tour I invited a very special guest, a well-respected UK journalist named Dave Reynolds. He was also a friend, depending on what he wrote last, of course! He liked the band and my work a lot, and at the time he was working for Kerrang! magazine.

He wanted to come and take a little sneak peek at how the boys were doing out there. He was also very aware of my Beauvoir disco nights, and a lot of other fun that I’d muster up, so he was very excited to join the tour and spend some time with us.

On one particular venture, our German manager, Michael Stark, had come to watch the show. He also had a very nice car, a luxurious BMW. After the show, we decided to set out on our next excursion, which of course was “Jean’s famous disco night!”

I had arranged something fun in town, and we were anxious to get there quickly. We were all dressed to the nines and ready to rock. We jumped in our cars, revved up the engines, and started heading out of the venue parking lot. For whatever reason, Michael stopped his car suddenly, and would you believe, I hit Michael’s car—hard!

These were very powerful cars, and everyone’s adrenaline was going from the show and in anticipation of getting to the club. Well, one of the guys slammed into me, then the next car into him. All this happened in the parking lot, no less! The cars were all totaled.
